Elena Kabashnaya was born in Kazanka, in the Nikolaev region of Ukraine, in 1953. In 1970 she finished secondary school and the the Pedagogical Institute in Nikolaev. She is the president of Dana, a very active and influential women's organization in Ukraine. Dana focuses on achieving women's human rights, stopping the trafficing of Ukrainian women in prostitution, improving women's health, and all other issues affecting women.
Kabashnaya's area of expertise is philosophy, particularly the relation between civil society, human rights, and violence. She states, "Ukraine is not a rich country. For us to buy everying is necessarily difficult, especially to women. Their social rights are impaired and they have no access to well-paid work or new economic possibilities. Much violence results, often violence against oneself. That is why I participate in the women's movement."
DANA is a non-governmental organization in the Mykolaiv region. It is dedicated to helping women in all areas of life and particularly with regard to improving legislation for women.
